LA GARITA

La Garita has many natural and historical attractions. Penitente Canyon offers great views, hikes and rock climbing. In the old church there is a art museum of special interest in the town of La Garita. Also in La Garita is a historical and very active trading post and café. The La Garita area is a small but growing area, with homes being added in the Canero Creek area of the adjoining foothills. Several popular campgrounds are in the La Garita area, as well. La Garita means “small lizard”.
